January and February spend

Following my January spend analysis last month I’ve done a bit of restructuring so I can track areas which need addressing.  I’m still concentrating on clearing a couple of loans this year if possible so much of my surplus is directed towards debt reduction.

Household running costs are modest for a one bed flat and there’s very little opportunity for reducing that (insurances, taxes, utilities).

Travel costs for February were negligable because I front-loaded a lot of  February’s costs into the end of January.

Food and household shopping for me and my moggies is holding steady around 10% of budget. I could cut this back (there’s a weekly organic veg delivery in there) and indeed once we hit the growing season and the allotment and back garden start producing I hope to see this decrease.

The lunches out has crept up – I’ve had too many days running late and times when it’s easier to grab breakfast on the way or lunch between meetings. A dangerously slippery slope for me as I can easilt end up spending £10 a day – which over a week and a month adds up and would be better spent elsewhere!

Bit of an increase in home and garden spend this month – wholly accounted for by costs of manure for the allotment, compost and some additional plants to brighten the garden.  Then there was the RHS Show and the seed potatoes, yakon, mashua etc!  But hopefully that will all pay off once the garden is in production.

The health and fitness spend looks less for February only because I’ve not paid my PT yet! And mastering the intricacies of budgeting means there’s money to continue with the PT sessions – essential for both fitness and stress relief.

And the entertainment budget had a bit of a spike because I bought a lot of tickets to the BFI Flare Festival which kicks off next week (10 films in 12 days!) and there was car hire costs for moving plants and compost.

On the plus side it’s relatively consitent and heading in the right direction and just needs a bit of fine tuning!

Weekend plans

So it’s a ovely day in London with sunshine streaming in through the window – alas I;m at work (for at least another hour) and not in the garden elbows deep in planting out some stocks and primroses.

Weekend (gardening!) plans:

Front garden

  • finish potting above mentioned primulas and stocks do tidying p the raised bed/cobbled path (those cobbles will be going this year)
  • tidy up the bin area
  • take and post a few pics for the record!

Back garden

  • get down the firescape and into the garden (first floor terrace conversion)
  • make a (long) list of what needs doing to tidy things up and get the three veg beds back into production
  • remember that there are two bags of manure in the front garden that need to be moved to the back ready for veg bed prep
  • check on the two flower beds
  • work out when to give the deck and path a jolly good scrub and clean
  • remove dead plants/weeds and tidy away old pots
  • sort out tool store which lives under the fireescape
  • does the fence need painting this year?
  • can I get one or both of the raised bed plastic grow frames out
  • pics!

Allotment

  • quick check on how wildflowers planted last weekend are doing
  • maybe – if weather holds – tackle that final bit of grass and brambles which needs digging over
  • pics!

Inside

  • finish sortoing out seed stash – veg/flowers
  • prep for allotment sweed swap next weekend
  • add posts to allotment society blog
  • investigate funding streams for allotment soc meeting

Fitness achievements (Feb) and goals (Mar)

Brief background: back in November 2014 I realised I needed to do something about my fitness and flexbility. I was starting to develop back and knee pain after a day in the garden, my cardio fitness levels sucked and my joints felt like they belonged to a 90 year old.  So I took myself down to the gym, found a PT who specialised in remdial injuries and issues (and understood them having been a pro footballer until he blew out his knee).

I’ve been training 3 times a week with him since Dec 2014 – which as far as I’m concerned is not a luxury. It’s an investment in my fitness, and both physical and mental health.  Gym sessions blow away all the niggles of a stressful day at work.  So I’m a heck of a lot stronger, fitter and more flexible than a year ago – though theoretically I could still do with dropping quite a bit of weight.

I also bought a Fitbit Charge last summer and fell in love.  As someone who’s quite moticated by charts and graphs and stats it’s just what I needed to get myself off the couch and moving!

My overall fitness targets and actuals for February were:

* 11 / 12 PT sessions (lovely PT celebrated his birthday on Monday – so 1 session down)
* 10 / 12 cardio sessions (minimum of 30 mins)
* 342,301 / 350,000 total steps which is 159.53 / 160 miles
* 1456 / 1500 active Fitbit mins
* 13,945 / 12,000 total exercise cals (PT + cardio + walking + gardening)
* 83,574 / 83,000 Fitbit cals (total cals per month)
* 14 / 29 stretching sessions (20 mins min) – to keep the lovely PT happy.

So overall not too shabby – though I obviously need to work a lot harder on getting daily stretching into my routine. I want to increase my cardio, active minutes and hit more stretching sessions so my targets for March are:

* 12 PT sessions
* 15 cardio sessions (min 30 mins)
* 350,000 total steps / 160 miles
* 1700 active mins
* 15,000 total exercise cals (PT + cardio + walking + gardening)
* 83,000 Fitbit cals (total cals per month)
* 31 stretching sessions (20 mins min) – to keep the lovely PT happy

I got around 10,000 steps a day most days in Feb.  That’s my baseline for March though I’d like to get closer to hitting 15,000 a day. At least I have a plan?!

January spend

This month’s spend profile is pretty much where I expected it to be – which is not exactly frugal!

43% of my spend goes on household costs, travel, food and groceries and entertainment each take approximately the same amount. Around 50% is being actively thrown at reducing debt ASAP and the balance is a little bit unattributed at the moment!

Sunday night batch cooking

How can it be 15 February already?  What happened to January and can I have it back please?

I’d planned to go to the allotment today. But I was out every night last week – gym sessions on Mon, Weds, Fri plus the first meeting of 2016 for the allotment society committee, Tuesday, and a grass roots sustainable org’s AGM on Thursday – meant I woke today feeling shattered!

Instead it today became all about looking at budgets and clearing out old paperwork.  I’m not quite there yet and have some more comparisons to run – so there’ll be a future post about budgets/budgeting etc.

This evening has been about minimising food waste and batch cooking.  I had a few old carrots and parsnips, an ancient quarter of red cabbage and rather old bramley apple, and some cauliflowers and leeks which were tipping over. So soups and bakes it was!

2016-02-14 Batch cooking

The cabbage and apple were turned into spiced winter red cabbage and apple soup – melt a little butter, add a medium sized onion and cook ’til translucent, add spices (allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves) cook for a couple of minutes, add shredded red cabbage and water, cook for 30 mins, then add chopped apple, cook for another 30 mins, and liquidise. Smells fabulous – and will be frozen to make winter warming soups to go with my lunchtime salad in a couple of weeks.

The parsnips and carrots made spicy parsnip and carrot soup (yes there’s a theme): chop and cook together until tender, liquidise, add suitably large shake of cumin and turmeric, decant to individual portion pots for lunch next week (again to go with salad and protein).

Finally the sad slightly rubbery cauliflower and leeks were parboiled, popped in a pyrex dish and I added a leftover courgette and baby fennel.  Whip up a cheese sauce and add a generous shake of nutmeg, pour over and cook for 20 mins or so and there’s yummy cheesy leek and cauliflower bake – a suitable side dish to go with whatever fish plus green side dish (probably either kale or broccoli considering the contents of my fridge) I decide to whip up quickly in the evenings next week.

And even better – zero food waste.
